Grilled Herring




Description:

One of the cheapest meals ever , yet one of the most nutritious and delicious there is!!! no cooking skills required !! only a small barbecue , or even an oven grill
ONLY DRAWBACK (especially for those in flats and houses without outdoor facility): Herring grilling is SMELLY , but the enjoyment is such that it is worth putting up with the smell




Ingredients:
1 fresh herring per person
nothing else !


Directions:
  • Choose a good size herring , as fresh as you can get it , pass it under water and put it under your grill (or on your bcue )
  • Turn it often to ensure gradual and even grilling rather than too quick burning
  • When done , serve in a small dish , to be eaten with a sprinkle of soya sauce

To be accompanied by japanese rice and miso soup ( i will add both recipes on this site soon ) and as here with steamed broccoli and home made pickles  (will add recipe for those too)

One of the joys of this dish , apart from it's taste , is that it is a bit like a box of chocolate : you never know what you are going to get (until its cooked) :
Inside the fish (in season) you will either get the ROE , or the eggs ;

my favourite is the roe : cooked inside the fish : its to die for !!! similar to brains in texture , together with soft fluffy rice : ummmmmmmm
